Toon, toonh, or Tooh as it's spelled by the makers of Gori Tere Pyaar mein, is a Punjabi word, more of an unofficial kind, which is used for bum, ass, backside, behind, whatever you call it. In fact the usage of the word here is cute kind, like sometimes tush is used.
Now if you would want to know what's an 'unofficial' kind of a word, let me tell you that the word is not easy to find in a dictionary, and I couldn't find it online or offline in a dictionary. However, the lyrics very clearly tell in the first line itself that the word is used for 'booty'. So looks like it's one of those words that pass on through generations unofficially, without being formalized. Also, words like 'toonh' would not have too high a possibility of being formalized I guess, so unless it gets more official, let's shake our toonhs unofficially. :D

ReplyDeleteAs far as i know the word is 'thuiihn',dont know if u would understand if u are not aware of punjabi pronunciation. there is a difference her too, the same word is used for two regions of our body in different regions of punjab. like in south punjab or malwa it s used; that is thuiihn; for 'back' or lower back' as in 'meri thuiihn dukh rahi hai ajj' or meri kamar mein dard hai aj' ut in northern punjab like gurdaspur etc, the same word means 'ass'. so if a malwa person is using the same word publically without any hassles, he may be frowned upon if he uses it openly in gurdaspur.
ReplyDeleteBut i had never ever heard of this 'tooh or toon' thing till now. may be it is used in some places instead of 'thuuihn' or may be they have bollywoodised it.
i had thought the tooh is for some music sound like we use tiinng tiingg etc. khair, till now the song used to sound good to me, now let me see.
I agree with the remarks above, there are two words in Punjabi Dhoohi and Dhooha.... It's the lowest part of back... not back and not even ass... it ie generally avoided to speek such word in well cultured society...
