Ae Dil Hai Mushkil comes from the popular, very popular old song mostly titled as 'Ye hai Bombay Meri Jaan.' The song begins with the lines 'Aye dil hai mushkil jeena yahaan, zara haT ke, zara bach ke, ye hai Bombay meri jaan...'

The lines translate to, 'O my heart, it's tough to live in this place, move a little, be a bit careful, this is Bombay, my dear.'
