Main Jise Odhta Bichhata Hoon | Dushyant Kumar Ghazal Translation

One of the famous ghazals by Dushyant Kumar, whose 'ho gayi hai peer parbat si pighalni chahiye' is very popular, and used in multiple places, including the film Halla Bol. In the film Masaan, Varun Grover has written a song that uses the she'r 'tu kisi rail si guzarti hai' as the mukhDa.

Gulon mein Rang Bhare Lyrics Translation | Haider

Movie: Haider
Music: Vishal Bhardwaj
Ghazal: Faiz Ahmad 'Faiz'
Singer: Arijit Singh

The famous ghazal of Faiz keeps getting more mainstream and more popular by the day. After being sung by Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh, the ghazal has been in Bollywood too, though in the form of a song with just the Mukhda borrowed from the original [Mohit Chauhan/KK, Film: Sikandar]. This time it's none other than Vishal Bhardwaj composing it for Arijit Singh to sing. A slow track, it begins with a sher in between and then comes to the beginning. Expect that to be Gulzar Sahab's way.

Sawaal-e-Wasl par Unko Udu ka Khauf Hai Itna Meaning

I was listening to Jagjit Singh singing the famous ghazal aahista aahista, and there was this line, sawaal e wasl par unko udu ka khauf hai itna, that Jagjit ji began to explain. Here is the meaning for you.

Sawaal-e-wasl was the question of meeting. In his words, when you ask for a date, that is sawaal-e-wasl. Udu is a rival. In his words again, there is a villain in every movie, he is Udu, [or Udoo]. [I am guessing we're talking about movies which have a villain fighting for the girl.] He also tells us that even an enemy can be called Udu.

Ye Kasak Dil ki Dil Mein Lyrics Translation for Ghazal

This beautiful Ghazal by Bashir Badr was once sung by Mohammad Vakil, Saregama mega final winner of 1998. Here is a translation of the ghazal, including all the shers I could find, irrespective of the ones sung.

Ye kasak dil ki dil mein chubhi rah gayi
Zindagi mein tumhaari kami rah gayi

This aching of my heart remained pinching my heart (forever)
(that) there remained an absence of yours in my life..

Har Zulm Tera Yaad Hai Lyrics Translation [Sajjad Ali]

Music and Singer: Sajjad Ali
Lyrics: Aftab Muztar

Har Zulm tera yaad hai, bhoola to naheen hoon
Aye vaada faramosh, main tujh sa to naheen hoon

I remember every cruelty of your, I've not forgotten it..
O promise forgetter, I am not like you at least..

Saahil pay khaDay ho tumhein kya gham, chalay jaana
Main doob rahaa hoon, abhi dooba to nahi hoon

You're standing on the shore, what's your problem, go [in some time, when I'm gone]
I'm drowning, but haven't drowned as yet..

Ek Ghadi Lyrics Translation [D-Day]

Movie: D-Day
Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Lyrics: Niranjan Iyenger
Singer: Rekha Bhardwaj

'Ek Ghadi' is a ghazal sung beautifully by Rekha Bhardwaj, in which the singer is reasoning with her beloved to stay another moment and not to leave yet.

Ek ghadi aur Theher ke jaan baaqi hai
Tere lab pe mere hone ka nishaan baaqi hai

Wait another moment, as there is life still remaining
Your lips still have the mark of my being there

Shab ke chehre pe chardha rang savere ka to kya
dhalte khwaabon mein abhi apna jahaan baaqi hai

So what if the color of morning has risen on evening’s face?
In setting dreams, our world is still remaining

Yoon bichhad ke mujh se na sazaa de khud ko
Abhi haathon se tere jurm-o-gunaah baaqi hai

Separating from me like this, don’t punish yourself
There are still crimes and sins left (to be committed) by your hands

Khilte phoolon ka fasaana to bas bahaana tha
Bujhte sholon ka dastaan baaqi hai

The story of blossoming flowers was just an excuse
The story of dying flames is still remaining

Aankhen sooni hain, meri maang ujdi hai to kya
Abhi haathon mein mere rang-e-henna baaqi hai

So what if my eyes are desolate.. and the parting of my hair disheveled?
The color of henna is still there is my hands..

Shaam se Aankh mein Nami si Hai: Lyrics, Translation

Album: Marasim
Music and Singer: Jagjit Singh
Lyrics: Gulzar

shaam se aankh mein nami si hai
aaj phir aap ki kami si hai

since evening, there is a glistening in the eyes, [as there are tears]
today once again, I feel your absence..

dafan kar do hume ke saans mile
nabz kuch der se thami si hai

bury me, so that I regain my breath
the pulse has slowed down for some time now

waqt rehta nahin kahi tik kar,
iski aadat bhi aadmi si hai

time never stays anywhere peacefully,
Its habit, too, is like that of humans..
[he says two interesting things here, the first one is that time never stops, and second is that humans are too fickle minded and they don't stay peacefully in one place]

koi rishta nahin raha phir bhi
Ek tasveer, Laazmi si hai

now there is no relation anymore,
even then, a photo is felt required, kind of compulsory..

Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho: Lyrics, Translation

This beautiful Ghazal sung by Jagjit Singh is translated very literally here, as our main motive here is to reach those who cannot understand the meaning of these words. The explanation part is kept almost completely out here.

Movie: Arth (1982)
Music: Jagjit Singh
Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi
Singer: Jagjit Singh

tum itna jo muskura rahe ho
kya gham hai jisko chhupa rahe ho

how is it so that you are smiling so much,
what is the sorrow that you are hiding..

aankhon mein nami, hansi labon par
kya haal hai kya dikha rahe ho

there is wetness in your eyes n smile on the lips,
what's your condition n what are you trying to show it as..
[as in, why are you trying to hide your sadness]

ban jaayenge zeher peete peete
Yeh ashq jo peete ja rahe ho

if you keep drinking, they'll become poison for you,
these tears that you are keeping on drinking..

jin zakhmon ko waqt bhar chala hai
tum kyon Unhe chhedhe ja rahe ho

those wounds that the time has almost healed,
why are you keeping on disturbing them..

rekhaon ka khel hai muqaddar
rekhaon se maat kha rahe ho..

fate is a game of lines (of the palm/forehead)
You are just getting defeated by lines..
[this could also be a slight provocation, to say that you can get up and beat these lines and make your own fate]

Tumko dekha to ye khayaal aaya Lyrics Translation

This beautiful Ghazal sung by Jagjit Singh is translated very literally here, as our motive is to reach those who cannot understand the meaning of these words. The explanation part is kept almost completely out here.

Movie: Saath Saath (1982)
Music: Kuldeep Singh
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singer: Jagjit Singh, Chitra Singh

tum ko dekha to ye khayaal aaya
zindagi dhoop tum ghana saaya

When I saw you, this thought came to me
Life is strong sun and you're soothing shade

aaj phir dil ne ek tamanna ki
aaj phir dil ko humne samjhaaya

Today, once again my heart wished for something
Today once again I pacified my heart..

tum chale jaaoge to sochenge
humne kya khoya humne kya paaya

When you leave, I'll think..
What I lost, and what I gained..

hum jise gunguna nahin sakte
waqt ne aisa geet kyoon gaaya

One, that I cannot hum,
Why did fate sing such a song?
[as in, why is the fate going completely against me]

Ai Khuda: Lyrics, Translation (Mr Singh Mrs Mehta)

Ai Khuda Tu Kuch To Bata Zara
Yahi Soch Ke Mushkil Mein Hain
Tu hua Hai Ham Se Bewafa
Ya Mughaalte Mere Dil Ke Hain

O God, tell me something,
Thinking of this only I'm in trouble,
Have you lost faith in me/gone infidel,
or are these delusions of my heart..

Tera Ishq Mera Junoon Hai, Tera Dard Mera Naseeb Hai
Deewangi Ki Yeh Intehaa, Tanha Bhari Mehfil Mein Hain

Your love is my passion, Your pain is my fate,
This is the extremity of madness, I am alone in a gathering full of people..

Ai Khuda Tu Kuch To Bata Zara
Yahi Soch Ke Mushkil Mein Hain
Tu hua Hai Ham Se Bewafa
Ya Mughaalte Mere Dil Ke Hain

Tu Hai Har Ghari Mere Saamne Phir Bhi Nahi Mere Paas Hai
Tujhe Soch Ke Mehsoos Ho Ke Do Qadam Manzil Se Hain

You're in front of me every moment, still you're not close to me,
When I think of you I feel I'm just two steps from the destination..

Ai Khuda Tu Kuch To Bata Zara
Yahi Soch Ke Mushkil Mein Hain
Tu hua Hai Ham Se Bewafa
Ya Mughaalte Mere Dil Ke Hain

Saaki Meaning

Saaki is actually a person who makes one's drink, a cup-bearer. But the word is also figuratively used for a loved one. Though most of the uses of the word are kept in context related to drinks, a Saaki is supposedly a person (in most probability a lady) who is either a loved one or a friendly cup-bearer.

Dil Gira Daffatan meaning

Dil gira daffatan, or dafatan as the credits write, means my heart fell suddenly, as Daffatan means suddenly, achanak in Hindi.

You can also find another usage of this word in Gulam Ali's famous Ghazal chupke chupke raat din, where he sings Khainch lena wo mera parde ka kona daffatan.. aur dupatte se tera wo muh chhupana yaad hai. He just suddenly pulls the curtain. :)
