Tamasha Meaning | तमाशा

Tamasha is a common, simple Hindi-Urdu word, which means a show, a spectacle.

In the earlier days when there were not so many means for entertainment, say television, or even radio, in the Indian subcontinent there used to be different shows by people in unorganized way (mostly roadside) and sometimes organized way (fairs, circuses etc.), and they were all called 'Tamasha.' Tamasha comes from the Persian root, where Tamasha means viewing or sight.

Tamasha is an upcoming movie starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, directed by Imtiaz Ali.

Love ki Ghanti Lyrics, Translation, Video, Review [Besharam]

Movie: Besharam
Music: Lalit Pandit
Lyrics: Rajeev Barnwal
Singer: Sujeet Shetty

Lalit Pandit comes up with the first song of his first big budget full movie album, and looks like he's got a positive here. Though the song is pretty simple and straightforward, it follows the style of Kishore Kumar songs, and pretty well. The new singer, Sujeet Shetty yodels Kishore way too, and that's the point you realize it's VERY much Kishore Kumar style. Ranbir Kapoor and Amitosh Nagpal speak their lines in the song with his singing and hence are credited too.

The lyrics and translation for the song are given here. The dialogues are in italics and in brackets, some explanations can be found.

Love ki ghanti baj gayi meri
Dekha usko pyaar hua
Aankhein phat gayi
Tabiyat lipat gayi
Dil mera kood padaa

My bell of love rang,
I saw her and fell in love..
My eyes went wide,
the mood got awesome,
and my heart just jumped..

Ban Besharam - Title Song Lyrics Translation [Trailer Version]

The Translation for the FULL VERSION is HERE.

Main nanga hua to
kaahe ki kaahe ki sharam
maai baap naa hi

When I got nude once,
what is there to be shy of?
I don't have any parents,
nor any religion..

Tedhe medhon se kadak
Seedhe saadon se naram
Fun harfanmaula hardum

Guide to the Trailer of Besharam

Abhinav Singh Kashyap, having created Dabangg, is here with his second film, with an outrageous name, Besharam. The trailer is out, and here we are with the funny trailer, and the nuances of it.

The trailer begins with Ranbir singing in 'Sarson de Khet' that is Mustard fields, a Yashraj favorite. To clarify the Yashraj connection, the song is none other than Tujhe Dekha to ye jaana sanam, Pyaar hota hai deewana sanam, in a Punjabified avatar, with the first two words of both lines translated to Punjabi.

Tainu vekhya to ye jaana sanam
Pyaar honda ae Deewana sanam..

The introduction of Babli, the hero says Badmaash, i.e. rogue, Awara i.e. vagrant, Robdaar, that is overbearing, which is almost exactly the same as dabangg in its meaning, and lastly hoshiyaar, that is intelligent.

The first dialog from Babli is 'Mere seene mein dil nahi dost, Jigar hai jigar. Aur wo kabhi toot-ta nahi. naanv aega Babli.' that is, 'In my chest there is no heart, it's Jigar there. And it never breaks. And the name is Babli.'

Badtameez Meaning

Bad-tameez is made up of bad-, or rather, bud- and tameez. Bud is Urdu for bad, and tameez is manners. And hence, badtameez, in Urdu, is a person who is ill-mannered, someone who is discourteous, uncivil, and in some cases, even vulgar.

However, bad manners in Urdu would be badtameezi, or bad-tameezee.

Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Shalmali Kholgade
Starcast: Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin

Itna maza kyun aa raha hai
Tu ne hawaa mein bhaang milaaya
Duguna nashaa kyun ho rahaa hai
Aankhon se meethaa tu ne khilaayaa

Why am getting so much fun,
Have you mixed bhaang in the air..
why am getting double intoxication,
have you fed me sweets with your eyes?

[Bhaang is a kind of marijuana, consumed especially on the festival of Holi, also, it is believed that if you eat sweets with something that intoxicates, its effect increases, and hence the lines]

O teri malmal ki kurtee gulaabi ho gayi
Manchali chaal kaise nawaabi ho gayi

Bole re Zamana Kharabi ho Gayi: Lyrics Translation (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani)

Movie: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Music: Pritam Chakraborty
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya

Balam Pichkaari joh toone mujhe maari
To seedhi saari chhori sharaabi ho gayi
Haan chunari pehen ke jo too ne maara thumkaa
To lattu padosan tihaari ho gayi

O Dear, when you colored me with the water gun,
This simple girl became a drunkard..
When you wore a chunari* and danced,
The neighbourhood girl fell for you..

Bole re zamana kharaabi ho gayi
Bole re zamaana kharabi ho gayi

The world says, it's gone bad..

* Chunari is an Indian scarf that girls use, though here it's mentioned that the boy is using it, for fun, during the festival of Holi.

Ala Ala Bada Aala Barfi: Meaning for Swanand Kirkire version

Swanand Kirkire's version of Barfi! title song, which is almost equally good as Mohit's version, has just one line changed, the very first, that is.

Instead of Aala ala matwala barfi, it goes aala ala bada aala barfi. And hence, the meaning of Aala is different here. Here, aala is Urdu and means great, 'top quality' or top-notch.

However, aala is also a Marathi word, meaning 'has come', and is used as slang in Hindi too. So you can take the line as 'Barfi is great, very great', or 'great barfi is here.' However, the difference is not too much between both of them.

Why is the movie called Barfi?

Have you heard of Murphy Radio? Seen that cute kid they used for advertising? If not, here is a picture of the kid.

So, this Radio used to be quite famous for decades in India, and the baby, just like Parle n Amul ones, was a symbol that could be identified by almost anyone.

Here, in the story of the Barfi!, Ranbeer Kapoor's mother wanted a kid like the murphy kid, and hence decided to name him Murphy. And even though she died early, probably in childbirth, the kid was named Murphy.

However, since Ranbeer is mute n deaf, he cannot say Murphy, but in the way mute people speak, is able to say what sounds like 'Barfi!', and hence the name of the movie.

Aala Ala Matwala Barfi Lyrics Translation (Barfi! Title song)

After Shirin Farhad ki to nikal padi, Mohit Chauhan once again does a lot of onomatopoeia singing, with all the gudgud and budbud sounds, of diving, sinking, bubbles, etc. We've tried to put the best meaning for such phrases, however, since they cannot be exactly translated, and in some places have no meaning at all, some words could be missing the meaning/translation.

Movie: Barfi!
Music Director: Pritam
Singer: Mohit Chauhan
Starcast: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana D'Cruz
Label: Sony Music

Rockstar Dialogs during Sadda Haq, English Translation

Pata hai bahut saal pehle yahan ek jungle hota tha. ghana bhayanak jungle. Phir yahan ek shaher ban gaya, saaf suthre makan, seedhe raaste, sab kuch saleeke se hone laga. Par jis din jungle kata, us din parindo ka ek jhund yahan se hamesha ke liye ud gaya.. kabhi nahi lauta. main un parindo ko dhoond raha hoon, kisi ne dekha hai unhe? dekha hai??

English Translation:

You know, many years who, there used to be a forest. A dense, terrifying forest. Then a city was built here, clean houses, straight roads, everything began to happen in order. But the day the forest was cut, that day a flock of birds flew away from here forever.. never to come back. I am looking for those birds, has anyone seen them? Has anyone??

Kaaga re kaga re tose itni araj mori.. Meanings n ..

kaaga re kaaga re mori itni araj tujhse chun chun khaiyo maans
khaiyo na tu naina more, khaiyo na tu naina mohe piya ke milan ki aas..

O crow, I have so much of request to you, eat (my body's) flesh,
but do not eat my eyes, don't eat my eyes as I have a wish to see my lover..

That much was the meaning of the lines written above, but seems there have been some doubts regarding what a Kaaga is. Here, some people think that Kaaga is a bird, and using the context of Parindey along with it.

As far as I can see it, Kaaga is not the BIRD that you see in parindey.

For one, Kaaga clearly is a crow. In fact the Hindi word Kauva has come from the Sanskrit word 'Kaak' which becomes kaaga in Awadhi, Braj, and many other dialects. So it's a crow and no other bird. Also, to make it more clear, by mythology, as well as science, a crow is one of the most common creatures who eat dead bodies, and that is what the singer is talking here about.

Secondly, and probably more importantly, the naadaan parinda here, that is the immature bird, is just a way to call his own self, someone who has lost his home and started alone on the unknown paths of the world. The Naadan Parinda is NOT the crow that the singer wants to eat his flesh. And the crow being talked to is not the bird who is roaming in the world, his haal behaal thaka haara.

Matter of fact, this part of the song is almost completely different from the rest of the world, but at the same time is important here as it tells where the singer thinks his home is.

PS: If all of this was understood to you, my apologies. Because it was understood and implied to me too, but after the discussion going in comments under the post on the song, I had to write this.

Rockstar Songs Review (2011, A R Rahman, Mohit Chauhan)

Rockstar starts with Mohit Chauhan singing Phir se ud chala. The song, that starts with a relatively light mood and gets a breezy effect from Mohit, like the words of the song, gets remixy by the end, actually a nice experiment that will catch on slowly. One very interesting part of the song, though, was the background vocals in the beginning and end.

Jo bhi main kehna chahoon, barbaad karen alfaaz mere. Frankly, I am a fan of this one line written by Irshad Kamil. And then A R Rahman in an experimental mood, composing like there is someone actually singing at a concert. And Mohit Chauhan singing that. I don’t think there was anything more required, but still, the song has a lovely video as an add-on. Seems I wrote a lot just praising the song, but guess it’s worth that. Do listen.

Kun Fayakun Meaning (Context: Rockstar song)

If you Google for the meaning of Kun Fayakun, you would somewhere find the words 'Be! And it is' and probably the detail that it's from Arabic.

Well, the meaning, which is literal, has something to do with the creation of this world, as per the Holy Qur'an. Even though Qur'an at various places says that the Earth and Heaven were created in six days, the part that mentions Kun Fayakun goes something like 'When He decrees a thing, He says to it only: "Be!" And it is.'

And it seems that as per the holy book that is how this world was created, instantly, with the phrase Kun Fayakun.

Also the song says jab kahin pe kuch nahi bhi nahi tha, vahi tha vahi tha, that is, when there was not even nothing, He alone was there.

Katiya Karoon Meaning

Katiya Karoon tera roon (कतिया करूं तेरा रूं) means I will spin your cotton. Basically katiya here means to spin cotton (सूत कातना), and roon here is rooi, that is cotton.

Hence, the meaning of the line Katiya karun tera roon main saari raat katiya karoon is I'll spin your cotton whole night, suggesting she'd do anything for him the whole night.
