Sulemani Keeda - A Mini Music Review

Yesterday I saw a mail asking me to review the album Sulemani Keeda, and I got four tracks in a file. The interesting thing, though, was that when I looked for the album, it seemed there were a few more tracks in the album, though most of them had no words. So here is a review of the four I got, and a little more.

Desi Opera, sung by Namit and Piya is one of the most innovative, probably THE most innovative track of Sulemani Keeda. The song is what it suggests, and is slightly funny of course. After all his acts, didn't know Namit was capable for this too. The song is the only composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the album.

PK - Music Review | Shantanu Moitra, Ajay-Atul, Ankit Tiwari

Ajay-Atul are quite good working with specific needs. Be it Singham's title track which did create a perfect atmosphere (I don't think it's easy to create music that is thrilling and yet catchy), or Agneepath's Shamsheer song. After giving Marathi touch to songs when needed, they this time create a Rajasthani feel to Tharki Chhokro, and boy, how it comes. Plus, Swanand Kirkire's lyrics give just enough of a Rajasthani touch to the lyrics, and there goes the fun song. Nicey nice.

If you thought PK in some corners had shades of Rancho, well, this Nanga Punga Dost sung by Shreya in a fun way might strenghthen your beliefs. But as such, it's a simple, light song with fun lyrics, something Swanand has become an expert at. Remember Barfi title? Swanand is king of fun introduction lyrics, I tell you.

Madras Cafe: Music Review [Shantanu Moitra]

The album begins with Papon singing Maula Sun le re, a call to God, giving in to Him and asking for help. Papon's deep voice suits the neutral-sad tone of the song, or you can say that Papon sings in that voice of his. Either way, the song is a treat to listen to after you have heard it a few times and got the meaning.

The second song is a slow, feathery light kind of song. Shantanu Moitra keeps just a little acoustic, guitar sound in the background and Zeb [of Zeb and Haniya] sings in a feather light mode, as if there is not much music to go for, as if it's a poem she is humming for her beloved. And the utterly romantic lyrics, 'Jaise milein Ajnabi' are just beautiful. Zeb's musical, but imperfect diction/rendition interestingly adds to the charm. Listen to it a few times, and fall for it.

Satyagraha Music Review [Salim-Sulaiman, Aadesh, Meet-Anjjan, Indian Ocean]

Like before.

  • Prakash Jha is making a multistarrer on a socio-political subject.
  • Music is taken from many composers.
  • Aadesh Srivastava is one of them. So are Salim Sulaiman.
  • One song is taken from something everyone remembers. Vande Mataram to Raghupati Raghav.
  • There is one item number kinda thing.

Now, the things that don't come under these bullets.

First of all, accolades to Prasoon Joshi for writing magic throughout.

Aashiqui 2 Music Review (Jeet Ganguli, Mithoon, Ankit Tiwari)

Aashiqui begins with Arijit slowly humming Kyunki tum hi ho, ab tum hi ho, composed by Mithoon. The song, though slow, is effective, mostly as a result of Mithoon's composition and Arijit's passionate singing. Both of these are common, but the combination of the two comes out for the first time and is certainly going to be a hit. You can even expect lot of Mithoon-Arijit in coming up films.

Ankit Tiwari, another composer in the album with just one song, sings the next track. He sings Apne karam ki kar ataayein (almost sounds like adaayein, though you can rely on BollyMeaning to get you the right word ;-) ) fine, but it's the sun raha hai na tu, ro raha hoon main part that works. The song has some light rock in the background, and the I-shout-I'm-sad lyrics work perfectly with it, though consistency is missing. Nice, but could be much better with some work on it.

And, oh, the song may sound like it's addressed to God, but then in the beginning and end, it mentions a yaara, beloved.

Jeet enters with Chaahoon main ya na, a simple song with typical Jeet sounds audible in the background to an extent. Arijit Singh and Palak Muchchal are nice. Okay. Slightly better than that actually.

Ek Thi Daayan: Music Review (Vishal Bhardwaj, Gulzar)

When I heard Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola, I was a little disappointed. The songs were good, but they were not what you expect from Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar after waiting so long for every album. But then, this time, the wait wasn't too long, and the results are just beautiful. No issues, Vishal. And Gulzar sir, just keep showing us your magic.

And now, let me begin with a confession.

Before I could get my hands on the song Yaaram, I had read the lyrics of the song. I was fascinated with the words. Just flabbergasted, head over heels, whatever you say. And then I read that piece of poetry again, and again. And then only I heard the song, and saw the promo. And somehow the whole process made me feel that Vishal couldn't do complete justice with Gulzar's words in this one. No, I am not saying the song is bad by any standards. But I still feel the superb beginning of the song kind of gets lost where the best words of the song begin:

Tumhaari file-ein, tumhaari diary
Gaadi ki chaabiyaan, tumhaari eyenakein
Tumhaara laptop, tumhaari cap, phone
Aur apna dil..

Still, a Very lovely song. Must listen.

The next track is Phurr kar ke. Tote ud gaye. I was missing Suresh Wadkar in MKBKM. And he's back here, with no less than Sukhwinder and Rekha to support him. The song, which personifies the heart and makes some respectful fun of it too, maybe slightly short of Raat ke Dhai baje in the element of madness. But it's certainly worth shaking a leg.

The next song, 'Kaali Kaali Aankhon ka' is a romantic track with a haunting music, and some haunting effects in the beginning of lyrics too, with the words kaali aankhon ka kaala jaadu. The song, which talks about eyes through its length, has some lovely comparisons drawn by Gulzar. The music fits the movie and the lyrics well, and Clinton's voice surprisingly sounds great for this song. My guess is that he's not sung this kind of a song before. His first solo for Vishal comes out really well. Still, listen to the song for its lyrics.

Talaash: Review, Lyrics, Meanings, Translations

All songs are composed by Ram Sampath with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. Lyrics are good in almost all the songs and make a strong point of the album which didn't otherwise have so much scope for variety in terms of music.

1. Muskaanein Jhoothi Hain
Singer: Suman Sridhar

The 'Caberette' song. Well written. Well composed. Fittingly sung.

2. Jee Le Zara
Singer: Vishal Dadlani

Background stuff. Well sung by Vishal. Nice composition but takes time to grow on you.

3. Jiya Lage Na
Singer: Sona Mohapatra, Ravindra Upadhyay

Traditionally speaking, the best song of the album. Sona is lovely and Ravindra's is a nice voice, though he sounds a lot like Sukhwinder here. Must listen.

4. Hona Hai Kya
Singer: Ram Sampath

Lyrics are nice. Song takes long to grow on you, but isn't bad.

5. Laakh Duniya Kahe Tum Nahi Ho
Singer: Ram Sampath

The better song sung by Ram. Simple, romantic, nice.

Ek Din, Kavita Seth: Review, Lyrics, Translation

Ek din is the first single of Kavita Seth's upcoming album Ek din. The music, composed by Kavita, is simple, but Jagadish Prakash's lyrics are good, and with Kavita's strong vocals, they leave a lasting effect after you've heard it full. In fact, listen a few times with attention to lyrics, and you may be addicted.

Ek din aur zindagi ko mila
Ek din aur zindagi ne jiya..
ek din poochhta tha raaton ko
Ek din aur mila tha baaton ko
Ek din koshishon mein uljhi saans
ek din manzilon ki thi kuch aas
ek din aur zindagi ko mila
ek din aur zindagi ne jiya..

One day more, the life got,
One day more, the life lived,
One day used to ask for nights,
One day more, the talks got,
One day, the breaths were trying something, getting entangled,
One day, there was some hope of reaching the destinations,
One day more, the life got,
One day more, the life lived..

Ek din tum hamare apne the
ek din bas adhoore sapne the
ek din tum the meri baahon mein
ek din kho gaye the raahon mein
ek din ye zameen thi chaandi si
ek din zindagi thi aandhi si
ek din ye zameen thi chaandi si
ek din zindagi thi aandhi si

One day, you were my own,
One day, there were some unfulfilled dreams,
One day, you were in my arms,
One day, I was lost in the paths,
One day this earth was like Silver,
One day, the life was like a storm..

Ek din mere ghar mein mela tha
ek din bas khada akela tha
ek din ki hi sab kahani hai
ek din ki ye zindagani hai

One day, there was festival at my home,
One day, it was standing alone,
It's all story of just one day,
This life is just one day..

ye bhi din bas sarak chal dega
ye bhi din bas sarak chal dega
na jane kahan
na jane kahaan
na jaane kahaan..

This day too will pass on..
Don't know where..

Ek Tha Tiger: Music Review, from Happysing

from Happysing.com

Should I start with Mashallah? Well, I think there is enough said about the song, and then everyone seems to have heard it, so let’s just say the song is probably going to be the weaker part of the album. Or maybe I can say the weakest, if Salman Bhai’s fans allow me to. Not because he’s wrong anywhere, cuz Sajid-Wajid HAVE given some good songs for him. How can I ever forget the small preview of Tere Mast Mast Do Nain I heard at IIFA. That number within seconds told us what a hit it was going to be. But then, this time they seem to have got it wrong. Not too wrong, but..

Rockstar Songs Review (2011, A R Rahman, Mohit Chauhan)

Rockstar starts with Mohit Chauhan singing Phir se ud chala. The song, that starts with a relatively light mood and gets a breezy effect from Mohit, like the words of the song, gets remixy by the end, actually a nice experiment that will catch on slowly. One very interesting part of the song, though, was the background vocals in the beginning and end.

Jo bhi main kehna chahoon, barbaad karen alfaaz mere. Frankly, I am a fan of this one line written by Irshad Kamil. And then A R Rahman in an experimental mood, composing like there is someone actually singing at a concert. And Mohit Chauhan singing that. I don’t think there was anything more required, but still, the song has a lovely video as an add-on. Seems I wrote a lot just praising the song, but guess it’s worth that. Do listen.

Ready 2011 (Salman Khan) Music Review (Pritam/DSP)

from Happysing:

Ishaq ke naam par karte sabhi ab raasleela hain, Main karoon to saala character dheela hai. While Neeraj Shridhar and Pritam are at it again, Amitabh Bhattacharya makes his presence very clearly felt in the song with his witty pen this time. Listen to this one: farak padta hai kya baahon mein munni hai ya sheela hai. Go for it.

Wait, was it Pritam rendering those English lines at the start of this wonderful song? It should have been Neeraj to start this romantic treat from KK, the song that’s called Humko Pyar hua. Not much to say, this one is good again. Go for this as well.

Enter DSP. THE Devi Sri Prasad with his only composition for Ready 2011, sung by Mika. I knew only one Ringa ringa in Telugu and as soon as I started the song, it was unmistakably the one. And I must say that the dhinka chika remake is not bad. Gives me the feel of the original song to quite an extent, probably as close as it could be. What is to be seen is how well the song fits Bollywood, cause I still imagine a typical Telugu movie background with the song. I’m in for this one.

Enter long vacha at the start. Enter must-dance-on-this DJ. Enter RFAK. In a whole just-dance mood, with his awesomely superb singing. Enter Tulsi with her can-somehow-sing-well-with-RFAK mood. Awesome song.

OK. Maybe I said too much about that last song, meri ada bhi aaj kya kar gayi, but frankly, I loved the song and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan singing in that mixture of long-vacha and some more pieces of popular Punjabi songs with that good melody at that fast pace, making a good thing to dance on, or simply listen to, as you like it.

Since I didn’t find anything special in the remixes, that is kinda all I have to say about the album, which actually isn’t less in any way. The album has just four songs and while all four are good, they are also different in their style and representation. While Pritam sticks to formula in Character Dheela, there is some experimentation added in Meri ada bhi, KK is good as ever and DSP’s composition is almost all new to Bollywood listeners. In short, it seems the music is ready to rock you, are you Ready?

Aisha: Music Review

Amit Trivedi is here again. I was not even done with listening to his awesome Udaan, when he came back with Aisha. The good thing is that unlike Udaan, Aisha is not all typical Amit Trivedi in his favorite rock mood, but much more versatility. In fact with the present variety, you may count it as, something like half a Dev.D.

The first song of the album is Suno Aisha, which is a peppy number with some light, likeable experiments with instruments. The song that falls almost in line with Vishal-Shekhar's Jaane Kyun and Jab mila tu, sounds different also because of the soft voices. By the way, with Amit Trivedi and more, the song even has Ash King, the guy who sang Dil gira daffatan for Rahman last year in Delhi 6.
