Lag Gayi Tashreef Meaning / Explanation

Now that's a complex one. So let's begin with what Tashreef is, and then we can move on to what it's not. Tashreef is an Urdu word with an Arabic origin, meaning honor. It shares the same root as shareef (gentlemanly, honorable), and sharaafat (nobility).

Now let's talk about what it's not. Somehow, the word is often considered as 'butt'. This probably came out of a bad reverse engineering on the phrase 'tashreef rakhna' which means to sit down, and which someone decided meant putting one's butt down, rather than place one's honor/honorable self. Here it's not clear at all how this supposed meaning became famous. Guess it's much like how all the butt jokes get their fame.

So while lag gayi tashreef could be understood as someone's honor being gone, if we try and insist on the real meaning of the word tashreef, it probably has come from the non-meaning of the word, as there is a phrase called g***D lagna where g***d literally means a** or butt, and the meaning of the phrase is to be in trouble. So effectively, lag gayi tashreef is supposed to mean 'to be in trouble'.

Befikre Meaning | बेफ़िक्रे, बेफ़िकरे

Befikre is Urdu and comes from 'Be-' meaning -less or without. Fikr is worry, and thus befikra (befikr in original, but often spoken as befikar or sometimes befikra) is someone who is without a worry.

Befikre is nothing but the plural of befikra and means 'those without worries.' As you might already have guessed from the first look and the song of the film, the characters in the film do seem to live up to the name, and are looking carefree about what the world might think. ;)

Mardaani/ Mardani Meaning [मर्दानी]

Mardaani as such is an adjective, which means like a man, manly, but here it's used more like a noun which would mean a brave lady.

The word mardaani was used by Hindi Poet Subhadrakumari Chauhan in her poetry for Rani Lakshmi Bai, who fought against the British for her kingdom when her husband died.

The word was used because she fought like any man would, at a time when women rarely went out of their homes and were not expected to fight in wars.

Mardaani is also title for an upcoming Hindi film starring Rani Mukerjee, where she's taking up the role of a brave cop who fights against the odds.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan: Lyrics, Meanings, Translations

Tumko dekh ke/ Mujhe saans aayi Reprise version Lyrics Translation

Movie: Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Music: A R Rahman
Lyrics: Gulzar
Singer: Shreya Ghoshal

tumko dekh ke yoon lagta hai
koi bichhda khwab aaya hai..
barson lambi raat se guzre,
subaha ka jhonka laut aaya hai

bahot der jaagi,
bahot door aayi,
khwab ne chhodi na meri kalai..
kab se meri saans ruki thi
mujhe saans aayi..

saans mein teri saans mili to,
mujhe saans aayi,
mujhe saans aayi..

looking at you, I feel,
as if some dream, separated from me, has come back..
as if we've passed through a years long night,
and now the morning gust has arrived back..

I kept awake for very long,
I came too far away..
but this dream didn't let me go (lit: didn't leave my wrist)
since so long was my breath stuck,
I breathed again..

when your breath mixed with my breath,
I was able to breathe again..

Tumse do Lafzon mein Jab Tak Hai Jaan Title song Lyrics Translation

Movie: Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Music: A R Rahman
Lyrics: Gulzar
Singer: Javed Ali, Shakthisree Gopalan

Tumse hi jeete rahe
tumpe hi marte rahe,
jab tak hai jaan..

I kept living from you,
I kept dying on you,
as long as there is life..

tumse do lafzon mein,
tumse ye kehna tha..
tumse hi mohabbat thi,
tumse hi mohabbat hai,
tumse kehna hai, yoon rehna hai,
jab tak hai jaan..

To you, in two words,
To you, I have to say,
You are the one I always loved,
You're the one I love..
I have to say, I have to live like this,
as long as I live..

teri aankhon ke sajde mein
rehna palkon ke parde mein
jab tak hai jab tak hai jaan
teri baahon ki narmi mein,
saanson ki garmi mein,
jab tak hai jab tak hai jaan

In prayer to your eyes,
I have to live hidden, (lit: under curtains)
long as I live, long as I live..
in the softness of your arms,
in the heat of your breaths,
long as I live, long as I live..

tumse do lafzon mein,
tumse ye kehna tha..
tumse hi mohabbat thi,
tumse hi mohabbat hai,
tumse kehna hai, yoon rehna hai,
jab tak hai jaan..

raatein jaagenge raaton mein,
teri bemaani baaton mein,
kori kori shaamon mein,
gungunaaye kaano mein,
jab tak hai jab tak hai jaan

we'll wake for nights, all nights,
in your useless talks,
in free, untouched evenings,
someone will whisper into my ears,
long as I live, long as I live..
long as I live, long as I live..

Birth of a Song: Gulzar in conversation with Bhawana Somaaya at BLF 2013

Jiya jiya re jiya re: Lyrics, Translation (Jab Tak Hai Jaan)

Movie: Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Music: A R Rahman
Lyrics: Gulzar
Singer: Neeti Mohan

Chali re, chali re,
junoon ko liye
katra, katra, lamho ko piye
pinjre se uda, dil ka shikra,
khudi se maine ishq kiya re
jiya jiya re jiya re jiya re
jiya jiya re jiya re jiya re
jiya jiya re jiya re jiya re
jiya ho..

I began (on my path),
with my passion,
drinking moments, little by little,
the hawk of a heart, flew away from the cage,
I loved my own self,
heart, o heart, I lived to the wish of my heart..

chhote chhote lamhon ko
titili jaise pakdo to
haathon mein rang reh jaata hai
pankhon se jab chhodo to..
waqt chalta hai,
waqt ka magar
rang utarta hai akira
udte udte phir ek lamha
maine pakad liya re..

catch hold of small moments,
like a butterfly..
the color stays in the hand,
when you leave from its wings,
time moves,
but the color of time wears away..
and then I caught hold of a flying moment..

jiya jiya re jiya re..

halke halke, pardon mein,
muskurana achcha lagta hai
roshni jo deta ho to
dil jalana achcha lagta hai
ek pal sahi, umr bhar use
saath rakhta akira..
zindagi se phir ek vaada maine kar liya re..

it feels good to smile slowly,
hidden behind curtains (with just oneself)
if it gives you light,
it feels good to burn your heart away..
if only for a moment,
the heart keeps it with itself for life..
and then I made a promise to my heart

jiya jiya re jiya re..

Challa ki Labhda phire: Complete Lyrics Translation

Challa literally means a ring, but here the singer calls himself a challa, something like 'the mad one' and sings in third person. The translation may be in first person or third for the ease of writing/understanding, but both ways it talks about the same person i.e. the singer. For detailed meaning of challa, see THIS POST.

Challa ki labhda phire
Challa ki labhda phire
Yaaron main ghar keda
Lokan toh puchda phire

What do I look for?
What do I look for like mad?
Where is my house,
I keep asking people..

Challa hansda phire
Challa ronda phire
Challa gali gali rulda phire
Challe tu sab da
Challe tera koi nai
Challa gali gali rulda phire
Challa ki labda phire

Challa Meaning - Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Gurdas Maan n more

Chhalla or Challa is such a common word in Punjabi poetry. Be it Challa India to aaya or Jab Tak Hai Jaan's Challa ki labhda phire. Challa is as such a simple thing, a ring.

However, this challa comes from the word, Jhalla, which is Hindi, used for someone who is mad, someone who's not orderly.

The meaning of Challa may vary across poetry, across compositions, however, mostly it means a young man, someone who's a little crazy, someone in love, or someone who just roams around freely.

For the Lyrics and English translation of the song challa from Jab Tak Hai Jaan, check THIS POST.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan: The Complete Poem with Translation

The poetry, given here, is NOT written by Gulzar Sir. This apparently is a work of Aditya Chopra, who earlier wrote Qaidi Number 786 for Yash Chopra's last film Veer Zaara and is the story and dialog writer for Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

teri aankhon ki namkeen mastiyaan
teri hansi ki beparwaah gustakhiyaan
teri zulfon ki lehrati angdaiyaan
nahi bhoolunga main
jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan

the naughty fun in your eyes,
the carefree forwardness of your eyes,
the wavey stretching of your hair,
I'll not forget, as long as I live..

tera haath se haath chhodna
tera saayon se rukh modna
tera palat ke phir na dekhna
nahin maaf karunga main,
jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan..

Jab Tak Hai Jaan Meaning

Jab tak hai jaan is Hindi/Urdu which means As long as there is life (in me), as long as I live.

Jab Tak hai Jaan is Yash Chopra's next movie.

Jab tak hai jaan was also a song in 1975 blockbuster classic Sholay.

Din jindadi ke chaar?

Generally, chaar din ki zindagi, literally four days of life, is used in context for small life, a life that will pass soon. But in haule-haule of Rab ne bana di jodi, Jaideep Sahni uses it in almost an opposite meaning, where he says 'tu sabr to kar mere yaar... hain din jindadi de chaar' (be patient, the life is four days long) which almost reverts the meaning of the phrase if it has to keep things in sync and the sentences meaningful.

Thanks to the wonderful singing of Sukhwinder, nobody had time to wonder about the words in that depth.

Ek Tha Tiger Meaning

Ek tha Tiger is the new Yashraj movie starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, and directed by Kabir Khan. The meaning of Ek tha Tiger is simply 'there was a tiger.'

In the film Ek Tha Tiger, the character of Salman Khan is called Tiger on whose story the movie is based.

Band Baaja Baraat Meaning

The meaning of Band Baaja Baraat (Or Band Baaja Baarat) is quite mixed up. Band here is the English word, while baaja means a musical instrument. Still, when you say band-baaja, it means a procession-like situation where a band may contain tens of members with quite loud musical instruments. Baaraat, at the same time means a wedding procession which a bridegroom is supposed to take to the bride's home, and the band-baaja explained here is part and parcel of this baaraat. So you see, band-baaja-baraat means a loud thing in a wedding.

Band Baaja Baraat is a new Bollywood movie produced by Aditya Chopra. The movie was earlier called Shadi Mubarak Ho (Congratulations on marriage).

Lafangey Parindey Meaning

Lafangey Parindey is.. quite a strange name. Reason being 'Lafanga' is a word completely from the Desi Language while 'Parinde' is a pure Urdu word. Also, Parinde was a much respected movie and hence adding Lafange to it seems odd.

Anyway, Lafangey Parindey would literally mean 'Rogue Birds' as Lafanga is used for someone who roams around uselessly on roads and a parinda is simply a bird.

We still have to see how the cutie boy Neil Nitin Mukesh fits in the role of a Lafangaa Parindaa.
