About

BollyMeaning was an Idea which suddenly took off one day.

I had been working on my blog Happysing for quite some time. During that I saw that there were a huge, yes, huge number of people who wanted meanings of words from songs, movies, and even titles of movies. I was trying to give as many meanings in my blog but then it was not possible to give away all that was required without disturbing the actual thing I had been using HappySing for: Reviews.

And then, it clicked me. It wasn't necessary that I adjust everything in one place. I could do more in a new place and give away as much as I knew. As much as people wanted.

Thus, BollyMeaning was originated. Simple as that, we try to provide meaning of and behind any word in Bollywood, be it songs' lyrics, movie titles, song titles, dialogs, poems, and sometimes even names.

As we write, Every word in Bollywood has a meaning. We find it.

People comment that the Rang De song from "My Name Is Khan" are really nice, or inspiring - Have you done a translation of their meaning?

Thanks, PB

Amazing attempt! I browsed through your blog and learnt the meaning of many words, the meanings of which I have been seeking since some time. Esp the urdu words. Now that I know the meaning the songs become more beautiful.
Could you also post the meaning of punjabi words regularly used in Bollywood songs? Thanks and keep up the good work!

Found this blog recently - very, very useful! Awesome job! :)

One request though: would it be possible to add the name of the movie to the tags of your posts, going forward? That way it would be easier to see all the songs for one movie in one place too. :)

Thanks for this very useful blog. I regularly search the web for meaning of Hindi and Urdu words and phrases, though not always with success. Just interested in understanding 100% of what I hear in the movies.
Keep up the good work!

The blog is AWESOME! Thanks a lot!!!
I just wish the search was more handy and, maybe, more songs from older movies.

But I do realize it's a huge load of work and it's impossible to fulfill all the requests...

Great blog! It's hard to find a Bollywood site that's not cluttered with pictures of actors, stupid polls, and dubious 'click here' links. :)

I came across a simple line recently, "sadke jawan." As far as I can tell with my lousy Hindi it sorta means "offering of youthful energy," or "gift of youth." Is there an idiomatic meaning?

Harshit Gupta said...

@jondotkom

This jawan is more of Jaawaan, or one could say jaawaaN, as the N is not really spoken here, and is completely different from jawan that is more like Jawaan when we spell the two properly.

Jawaan means young, but jaawaan instead is a Punjabi form of Hindi jaaoon. The meaning of 'sadke jaawan' is something like 'I sacrifice myself on' something idiomatically, like loving something so much that you are ready to sacrifice yourself for it..

Dil lagda hi na
Ki kara
Soneya behke tareya ki cha
Rahva takdi reva teriya

Lamha lamha aise gujri hai raate
Jaise ho sehra ka koi rasta
Tanha tanha khud si hi ki hain baate
Or aansoovo se kiya hai har gilla

Jaane ye kaisi kami hai
Tu hai par tu nhi hai
Teri yaad hai mere jeene ki ik vajah

Mahiya tenu vekhya bina
Dil lagda hi na
Ki kara
Soneya behke tareya ki cha
Rahva takdi reva teriya

Lamha lmaha aise gujri hai raate
Jaise ho sehra ka koi rasta
Tanha tanha khud si hi ki hain baate
Or aansoovo se kiya hai har gila

Sapne sapne jo the apne
Sath main sajaye
In aansoovo main sabhi bah gaye
Wade saare humne wafa ke nibhaye
Phir kyu na jaane kyu tanha rah gaye
Chahoon magar ho na paye
Kasie dil tuje bhulaye
Dhonde tuje soche tuje har jagah

Mahiya tenu vekhya bina
Dil lagda hi na
Ki kara
Soneya behke tareya ki cha
Rahva takdi reva teriya

Lamha lmaha aise gujri hai raate
Jaise ho sehra ka koi rasta
Tanha tanha khud si hi ki hain baate
Or aansoovo se kiya hai har gila)....I HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME

I hope you don't mind if I use your translations in an online book I'm writing on Wattpad http://www.wattpad.com/story/3039965-silently-falling-in-love.

Please do let me know if this is an issue.

Harshit Gupta said...

No, that way it's definitely not an issue. Though, if you want a little longer that a line or two, I'd appreciate if you add a mention and backlink.

Regards,
Harshit.
