Sulemani Keeda - A Mini Music Review

Yesterday I saw a mail asking me to review the album Sulemani Keeda, and I got four tracks in a file. The interesting thing, though, was that when I looked for the album, it seemed there were a few more tracks in the album, though most of them had no words. So here is a review of the four I got, and a little more.

Desi Opera, sung by Namit and Piya is one of the most innovative, probably THE most innovative track of Sulemani Keeda. The song is what it suggests, and is slightly funny of course. After all his acts, didn't know Namit was capable for this too. The song is the only composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the album.

Khwahishein meri hain saari tujhse
Aadatein meri hain saari tujh se
rabba ne ye kiya raham,
mujhe mila mera sanam
mili zamaaane ki sabhi khushiyaan

My Lord has done this favor to me,
I have got my beloved,
I have got all the joys of life..

PK - Music Review | Shantanu Moitra, Ajay-Atul, Ankit Tiwari

Ajay-Atul are quite good working with specific needs. Be it Singham's title track which did create a perfect atmosphere (I don't think it's easy to create music that is thrilling and yet catchy), or Agneepath's Shamsheer song. After giving Marathi touch to songs when needed, they this time create a Rajasthani feel to Tharki Chhokro, and boy, how it comes. Plus, Swanand Kirkire's lyrics give just enough of a Rajasthani touch to the lyrics, and there goes the fun song. Nicey nice.

If you thought PK in some corners had shades of Rancho, well, this Nanga Punga Dost sung by Shreya in a fun way might strenghthen your beliefs. But as such, it's a simple, light song with fun lyrics, something Swanand has become an expert at. Remember Barfi title? Swanand is king of fun introduction lyrics, I tell you.

Dil Darbadar (PK) Lyrics Translation | PK

Movie: PK
Music: Ankit Tiwari
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
Singer: Ankit Tiwari
Music Label: T-Series

One very different song from PK, different from the other songs of the movie that is, composed and sung by Ankit Tiwari. I am not sure if this was intentional, but the song to me seems a little Sufi in nature, as the object being addressed by the protagonist, though not clear who, seems to be God from some lines, and yet he considers the addressed his friend.

Bhagwan Hai Kahan Re Tu Lyrics Translation | PK

Movie: PK
Music: Shantanu Moitra
Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire
Singer: Sonu Nigam
Music Label: T-Series

A song about a person who is looking for God, doing the best he can do in life, and yet not getting what he wishes for, as he desperately asks God where He is.

Probably The best, and certainly the most intense song of PK, 'Bhagwaan..' sounds a little like Jaane nahi denge tujhe from 3 Idiots, but the subject is different, Swanand Kirkire's lyrics are lovely again, and hence, the overall offering is very different. Sonu Nigam finds yet another gem, something close to Abhi Mujh mein kahin in terms of intensity and of course, he sings it wonderfully. Must listen, highly recommended.

Chahoon Tujhe Khud se Siva | Zid Title Song Lyrics Translation

Movie: Zid
Music: Sharib-Toshi
Lyrics: Shakeel Azmi
Singer: Sunidhi Chauhan
Label: Sony Music

Film Zid (literally stubbornness, obstinacy) is about a girl's obsession, and in this song, this obsession is being talked about. The song has a feeling of thrill in it, which would probably come out even better as the song gets its placement in the film.

Zid, Ziddi Meaning | ज़िद, ज़िद्दी

Zid is a common Hindi/ Urdu word which means insistence, persistence, or doggedness.

It can be used as a noun, as well as a verb, the latter as 'zid karna', that would mean to be stubborn, to be obstinate, to decide something and just not budge from that.

I would like to add here that zid is mostly considered a negative thing, especially since every child in Hindi/Urdu speaking regions is asked not to do 'zid', or not to be 'ziddi'. Ziddi is someone who does zid, someone who shows stubbornness, or is being stubborn.

Mareez-e-Ishq/ Haath Rakh De Dil Pe Zara Lyrics Translation | Zid

Love is a Waste of Time Lyrics Translation | PK

Movie: PK
Music: Shantanu Moitra
Lyrics: Amitabh Varma
Singer: Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal
Music Label: T-Series

Due to non-existence of 'v' sound in Bengali and close languages/dialects, 'v' and 'w' are often spoken as a very strong 'b', more like 'bh' instead, and many times, this tendency continues with English words as well. The same accent has been used here, and hence, 'waste' sounds like 'bhe-ist' here.

This is one of the most memorable songs of Basu Bhattacharya's National Award Winning film Teesri Kasam. The song talks about how we don't need to say or do wrong things, as this is a small life after which we all have to just go as we came, taking nothing from here.

This song, an item number as we call it in Bollywood these days, is a catchy track with Shraddha Kapoor making a special appearance, also probably a first one by hers in a dance number.

Tharki Chokro Lyrics Translation | PK

Movie: PK
Music: Ajay-Atul
Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire
Singer: Swaroop Khan
Music Label: T-Series

Tharki as such means lewd, lascivious, pervert. However, here the person who is called Tharki seems to be doing such things because of his naivety, his innocence one can say, or simply his ignorance of the ways of the world, and hence, though he's called pervert here, he's considered sweet and innocent, while tharki, which means lewd, has become a way to call him, like a nickname maybe.

The song is a fun song with the Rajasthani dialect of Hindi in there. The singer, Swaroop Khan, is a Rajasthani folk singer, who has appeared in reality show Indian Idol.

Surya Ast Punjabi Mast Meaning

A few months ago a party song 'Sooraj Ast te Baabbe Mast' was there on TVs, from a film called 'What the Fish' and I thought it was a fun line. Now the same sentence gets Punjab-ized and comes up as Surya ast, Punjabi mast.

Anyway, the sense of the line is that as the sun sets, that is as soon as it's evening, Punjabis get 'mast', which generally means they enjoy, but here it is also a euphemism for 'get drunk.' Of course, if we are generalizing so much, we can also say that most Punjabis do enjoy when they get drunk, though I wouldn't suggest that they enjoy only when they drink or just by that means.

Pakeezah Meaning

Pakeezah [or Paakeezah or Pakizah or Pakeeza or Pakiza, Devanagari:पाक़ीज़ा, Persian/Urdu:پاکیزه] is a word from the Persian [Farsi] language, which means pure, clean, righteous.

The word has come to Urdu from Persian, and has the same meaning there too. Pakeezah was a 1972 Hindi film starring Meena Kumari, and is the title of a song in the film Ungli.

G Phaad Ke Meaning

Naacho Saare G Phaad ke!

And there, you said it all. Without saying much, really. Yes. G is the same word which was the bone of contention in Honey Singh's Party All Night in Akshay's Boss. It's.. well, some adult supervision may be needed here, gaand, which means arse in older English, ass in modern one, and bum in a rather Khoobsurat language.

However, the word is just uttered as 'G' in the song, and one can simply consider it Hindi 'Jee' which means heart, and you could even say you have to dance Jee Phaad Ke, that is, opening your heart, with all your heart, freely, if you will.

However, the makers probably didn't want this to be taken in a wrong way, and hence mentioned the song title as 'G Phaad ke', so you know it's not the heart, but another part of your body literally behind you.

And, oh, if I missed the meaning of G Phaad ke in the whole drama, it would still mean 'without any inhibition' here, the same if you thought it was 'jee'.

Gamzada/ Ghamzada Meaning

Ghamzada is an Urdu word that comes from the root gham, that means sorrow.

-zada (not zaada which is with a flat 'a') is a suffix used which means hurt, affected by. So when we add it to gham, it makes ghamzada, one who is affected by sorrow, or simply, sorrowful, sad.
