Chennai Express: The Honey Singh Drama

I was surprised, and not pleasantly, when I heard Yo Yo Honey Singh was singing for Vishal-Shekhar in Chennai Express.

I am not against Honey Singh's rapping style. He's a talented guy who does sing well. But I have never liked the person that Honey Singh is, simply because of the way he deals with and talks about girls. So I was surprised, or say, shocked, when I heard Vishal-Shekhar, who have been known for their character more than their music, with especially Vishal, who is so vocal for social issues, are getting Honey Singh to sing for them. That too, with none other than SPB. Truth be told, I couldn't believe this.

For some time, I was thinking of asking Vishal and Shekhar on Twitter if this was really true, when I found out that the reports about Honey Singh singing for the movie were false, and apparently Shekhar himself made that clear.

That's great. Thanks V-S. Never mind Yo-Yo. I hope you too will leave the days of your bad name behind and be good someday soon.

Update: As you probably know already, Honey Singh is singing Lungi Dance in Chennai Express. In the words of an anonymous commenter, that's a big slap on my face. Not sure, though I hated the song like anything. Still, it's there on BollyMeaning. Btw, it's supposed to be a tribute to Rajinikanth Ji. I wonder if someone has asked the superstar how he liked it.

Update: As expected, this seems to have created an issue between Vishal-Shekhar and Shahrukh Khan, and the duo, originally the judges of Indian Idol Junior, were not present at the show in the episode where Shahrukh Khan came to promote Chennai Express.

Ban ke titli dil uda hai kahin door: Lyrics Translation [Chennai Express]

Movie: Chennai Express
Music: Vishal Dadlani-Shekhar Ravjiani
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
Singers: Chinmayi Sripada, Gopi Sunder

Music of Chennai Express comes as a mixture of North and South Indian singers, as Vishal-Shekhar take Yo Yo Honey Singh to SPB, interestingly the two of them being in one song. In the same spirit, Vishal-Shekhar get AR Rahman's regular, Chinmayi, to sing for them this time, along with Gopi Sunder, who is a music composer for southern movies. As such Gopi has worked for Vishal-Shekhar as a keyboard programmer, though, with Chinmayi it's probably their first association.

Ban ke titli dil udaa udaa
udaa hai kaheen door
Chal ke khushboo se judaa
judaa judaa hai kahin door
haadse ye kaise, ansune se jaise,
Choome andheron ko, koi noor..
ban ke titlee dil udaa udaa
uda hai kahin door..

Becoming a butterfly, the heart has
taken a flight.. has flown somewhere far away..
How are these accidents, unheard,
As if some (divine) light kisses the dark..
becoming a butterfly,
the heart has taken a flight, somewhere far off..

Sirf keh jaaun yaa
aasmaan pe likh doon
Teree taareefon mein
chashme baddoor

should I just tell you, or
should I write on the sky,
in your praise -
far be the evil eye..
[i.e. he wants to write far be the evil eye in the sky so that in the entire sky where the heart is flying, nobody can see her with an evil eye.]

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Meaning

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag literally means 'Run Milkha Run'. Milkha here refers to Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete who won Gold in 1958 commonwealth games and represented India in 1960 and 1964 Olympics, missing a bronze in a photo finish.

The film's title is inspired by words of Milkha Singh's father, who asked him to run away to save his life in the riots during Partition of India. At the same time, the words are also significant as Milkha Singh became an athlete, winning medals for 200m and 400m.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is an inspiring story of an athlete with few resources, but an undying spirit, and his fight against the odds. Milkha Singh sold the story to makers for one rupee. It is said that the profits from the film will be used for the benefit of needy athletes.

Apne hi Rang mein Mujhko – O Rangrez Mere Lyrics Translation

Movie: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi
Singer: Javed Bashir, Shreya Ghoshal
Label: Sony Music

O Rangrez mere is one of the best songs of not just Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, but it's one of the best composition that Shankar Ehsaan Loy have come up with in past some time. The raag-based, slow paced song sung by Javed Bashir and Shreya Ghoshal is a conversational one where a loved one wants the beloved to color him/her in the color of the beloved and hence calls the beloved a dyer.

O rangrez..
O rangrez tere rang dariyaa mein
Doobnaa hai bas teraa ban ke
Haye nahi rehnaa doojaa ban ke

O dyer,
O dyer, in your river of colors,
I have to drown, becoming all yours..
I don't have to live belonging to someone else..

Krrish Meaning

Krrish was not meant to be a name. Not for a person at least.

However, the movie was to be named Krrish, and hence, they showed in the first part of the movie how the Superhero played by Hrithik Roshan got the name.

As per the movie, Hrithik Roshan's character is called Krishna, which is a popular name in India, due to Lord Krishna. As such, krishna is Sanskrit for dark or black, and hence, the dark skinned God was called Krishna.

Anyway, so this character was called Krishna, and he has some superpowers which he has promised to hide from the world. But one day when he sees a kid stuck in fire, he saves him, but the kid wants to know his name first, and he starts telling him. He had only said Krish.. when he realized he couldn't give away his identity, and so, he stops there. And hence, he's called Krish, which was later spelt as Krrish.

Zarra vs Zara Meanings

Zara, or Zaraa to be more precise phonetically, [Devnagari:ज़रा, Urdu:ذرا, pronunciation:Zarā] is a common Urdu word which means 'a little', or 'just' or sometimes 'just a little', depending on the usage.

Some examples of the word's usage may be taken from the songs like 'Zara si dil mein de jagah tu' [give me a little space in your heart], 'zara zara touch me' [just, just touch me], 'zara dil ko thaam lo' [hold your heart for a moment] etc.

Zarra, or Zarraa, [Devnagari:ज़र्रा, Urdu:ذرّہ, pronunciation:Zarrā] however, is a different Urdu word with a double R sound, and means a particle, a speck, a shred. Zarraa is relatively less used, though it's a common word too.

One of the usage that I remember was in Noor from Delhi 6, which began with Zarre Zarre mein usee ka noor hai [There is His Light in every particle]. One recent song with the word in title was Zarra zarra mera de raha hai dua, by Sanjeev and Akshay Kohli, who are great composer Madan Mohan's son and grandson respectively.

One song where Zara and Zarra are often confused, is Tinka Tinka of Karam. The way Alisha sings it there, it sounds like 'zara' which means 'a little', but the context says the word should be 'zarra', a speck.

Lyrics, Meaning and Singing: Sawaar Loon vs Sanwaar Loon [Critique]

Amit Trivedi, for the first time, has a discredit to his name. I do not know if this has happened before this, but for the first time I feel he has been negligent, and the cost is that one of his songs irritates me, and many more, though not all, not even most.

Reason? One of the best songs of Lootera, at least one of the best could-be songs of Lootera, Sanwaar Loon, is sung with lot of irritating mistakes by Monali Thakur, and it reaches the audience like that. Even the title of the song, which should have been Sanwaar Loon, is Sawaar Loon, the former meaning 'I would decorate/adorn' and the latter meaning 'get a rider', if at all meaning something.

This is not all. Bhanvre are Bhavre, Jhonke are Jhoke, Kyoon is Kyoo, and it goes on, e.g. 'Ye saari koyale bani hai aaj daakiya' almost as if the singer got a bad cold while singing.

It's not like we haven't heard such things in the past, but this seems to have happened for the first time with such a beautiful song, a song that could be heard on loop, and remembered for ages, and that is what makes us sad. As for the blame, I'd blame the music director here, as the singer is a newbie, at least to this kind of song, and doesn't boast of Hindi as her first language. But Amit Trivedi is a music director who seems to take every small thing into account, so how he missed the 'talaffuz' in the only version of the introductory song of an Anurag Kashyap movie, is questionable.

Oh, I have beaten the boy to death. But that's the result of killing a must-have-been-a-favorite song. Hope they take care of this in future. Amitabh Sir, I hope you too are listening.

Nazar Laaye Na, or Tera saara main, is a song sung by a girl who announces to the world that no one should see her beloved, who has become/about to become his husband, with an evil eye.

Meethaa meethaa tu, khaaraa khaaraa main
Tera saaraa main, saaraa main..

I have lost myself (to you), I am completely yours..
You're all sweet, while I am salty..

Sindooree.. rang suhaagan sachchaa
Sachcha re.. sarmaayaa jo paayaa hai wo
Tu dil mein maahee aayaa hai
Maine maahee paayaa hai
Nazar laaye naa, koi nazar laaye naa

Sarmaayaa/ Sarmaya Meaning

Sarmaayaa [Devnagari: सरमाया, also spelled as Sarmaya] is an Urdu word which means property, something valuable.

The most popular line with the word is probably 'main tera sarmaayaa hoon, jo bhi main ban paaya hoon, tum se hi.'

Which means, 'I am your property, whatever I have become, it's due to you only.'

Ab Tu Bhaag Milkha Bhaag: Title Song Lyrics Translation [Rock Version]

After a long time, I hear a madly motivational song, and once again from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Every time you listen to the song, it gives you a high, and both SEL's music and Prasoon Joshi's lyrics are equally creditable for this wonder. Siddharth Mahadevan sounds a lot like Shankar in many places, and in his singing style too. He might not be as polished as his father, but his enthusiasm in the song sounds very real, and that was a necessity here.

Prasoon Joshi has written some really good lyrics (and I believe a bit tough, since I've already seen most lyric and translation writers making mistakes in this one), and they're a joy to listen to. Here are the lyrics with translation to the rock version. The Music for the album is on Sony Music.

Ye Tune Kya Kiya: Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Again: Review

Really. You can't help it now. Filmmakers have stopped releasing whole albums in one go. They release it song after song, so you need to review them song by song only.

So here is one, for the latest one we loved: Ye Tune Kya Kiyaa. From Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Again.

Pritam is doing some great stuff for some time now. Be it Agent Vinod's Raabta, or the whole Barfi, or Cocktail, or this, OUATIMA.

This song of his goes in Sufi/devotional style with the basic arrangements very similar to those of Qawwaali. The singing style in the solo sections of Javed Bashir is very much like in a devotional song. Rajat Arora's lyrics aren't too devotional, but they fit fine in the song. Amit Trivedi seems to have brought in Harmonium big time with Main pareshaan and a few more and Pritam has followed it up equally well with songs like Balam Pichkaari, so getting a harmonium here doesn't surprise one. But still, the good thing is that it's back in full volume.

The song doesn't sound something unique, but even in its usual-ity, it captures the listener in one complete listen. So once it begins running on the television, it'll not take long to be a hit. The TRANSLATION for the song can be found Here.

Maston ka jhund/ Havan Karenge Lyrics Translation (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag)

Movie: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi
Singer: Divya Kumar
Label: Sony Music

Oye havan kund maston ka jhund..
Sun saari raat ab
aisi raat rakh dil pe haath hum saath saath
Bolo kyaa karenge..
Havan karenge.. havan karenge.. havan karengey..

It's a place to work hard, for group of joyed men..
Listen all night now
On such a night, keeping our hands on hearts, together
what shall we do, say..
We'll perform a Yajna, we'll perform a Yajna..

[For detailed meaning of Havan Kund/ Havan/ Yajna, please see THIS POST]

Havan Kund/ Havan Meaning

Havan, also called Yajna, is a Vedic ritual in which people put on a fire in the center and make offerings along with chantings of mantras, mostly to please a god/goddess and/or achieve a certain objective.

Though nowadays these Yajnas are of relatively lesser length of time, earlier and as per mythology these could be long and difficult to complete, due to which a Yajna or a Havan is a symbol of dedication and hardwork for an objective.

Havan Kund is the center place in a Havan in which the fire is put on and all the offerings are made. It could be considered like a sanctum sanctorum for a Yajna.

Tohe Piya Milenge Lyrics Translation (Raanjhnaa, Sukhwinder Singh)

Movie: Raanjhanaa
Music: A R Rahman
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singer: Sukhwinder Singh, with KMMC Sufi Ensemble
Label: Sony Music

Tohe Piya Milenge is one of the best tracks of Raanjhanaa, and no doubt one of Rahman's favorites, Sukhwinder Singh gets it. And though the song has some moving music and some beautiful and slightly non-traditional arrangements, it's the lyrics of the song that create the soul of the song here.

Irshad Kamil's lyrics here are romantic and spiritual at the same time, the kind where a beloved turns into something closer to God, and God Himself can be considered to be a beloved. Basically these lyrics are highly inspired by what is actually the base of Sufism. Do listen to the song without thinking whether the piya [beloved] here is a human or God Himself, and you'll enjoy it all the more.

Jis ko dhoondhe baahar baahar
Wo baithaa hai bheetar chhup ke
Tere andar ek samandar kyoon dhoondhe dubke dubke..

The one that you search for, outside,
He's sitting inside (you), hiding..
There is a sea inside you, why do you search here and there..

Fukre/ Fukrey Meaning

Fukra is a Punjabi slang word which means Jobless, something who's doing nothing, 'wella' being another well suited Punjabi word for it.

Fukrey, which is plural for Fukra, hence means a gang of jobless guys, who basically do nothing and just roam around joblessly.

Rang mein Bhang Banarasiya: Lyrics Translation, Meanings (Raanjhnaa)

Movie: Raanjhanaa
Music: A R Rahman
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singer: Shreya Ghoshal
Label: Sony Music

Banarasiya is nothing but a person from Benares, or Banaras, or Varanasi, all different names for a place. It's a common way to call the natives of a place, like Mumbaiya. It's the same as New Yorkers, for example.

At the same time, Bana Rasiya could mean became a mad lover. So the word Banarasiya is used in two senses here, giving both the meanings. Such figure of speech with one word used for two meanings is known as Yamak Alankaar in Hindi/Sanskrit.

Aaye aye aye aye banaarasiyaa
Haye banarasiya

Here, here comes banarasiya..
Hey, banarasiya

Rang mein bhang ya bhang mein rang
Banarasiya, haye banarasiya
Sang mein jang ya jang mein sang
Banarasiya, haye banarasiya

Issaq Meaning

Issaq. That's the name. And it means Love.

If you read Hindi, it's simply इसक. But if you need Roman script only, well, for ease of understanding, you may simply read it as 'isak'.

The word is nothing but a form of 'Ishq' used in a villager's accent, and so, means nothing but 'love'.

Just to confirm, it's not Isaaq or something with a long aa sound.
