Atrangi Meaning | Atrangi Re

Atrangi is not a word generally found in Hindi dictionaries, but it's almost a well-known word now, with a pretty well-defined meaning. In Hindi speaking regions, the word seems to be coming from the parts 'at', or rather 'ati', which means a lot, or too much, and 'rangi', which means colourful. So something that is too colourful, not just literally but figuratively, is called atrangi.

There is a Hindi word atiranjit (अतिरंजित) which has the same meaning, and atrangi can be considered a tadbhava for the word.

As for the film Atrangi Re, the film's makers say that atrangi means funnily weird, which is a good way to explain what we called 'too colourful.'

Paglait / Pagglait Meaning | पगलैट

So Pagglait is going crazy. No wonder, as the album is a lovely one, with some lovely music from Arijit Singh and some beautiful words from Neelesh Misra, and Arijit. Coming to the meaning though, as most people are suspecting, Pagglait (or paglait, the double g isn't really useful for pronunciation here) is crazy. The word comes from Paagal (पागल) only, and is a very casual, in fact offensive way to call someone crazy. Not that calling someone crazy isn't offensive enough, but pagglait is adding another layer to crazy. That said, if you haven't listened to Pagglait yet, do listen to it. It's a crazy one. :)

Pangaa / Panga Meaning | पंगा

Pangaa or Panga [Devnagari:पंगा, Gurumukhi:ਪੰਗਾ] is a very famous word these days. As such the word comes to Hindi from Punjabi. However, it's become quite popular in Hindi, virtually replacing the actual usage of Pangaa that existed in Hindi, which wasn't used much [In Hindi, Pangaa means thin, watery, but is hardly seen anywhere].

So this Punjabi Pangaa means an issue, a fight.

The word is mostly used as 'Pangaa lena' [lena = to take] which means to get into an issue actively, and mostly when it could be avoided.

Pangaa is also used as 'panga hona' that simply means an issue or a fight to take place.

Saand ki Aankh Meaning | साँड़ की आँख / सांड की आँख

Saand is Hindi for Bull and Aankh is eye, so 'saanD ki aankh' (साँड़ की आँख, though often spoken as सांड की आँख) literally translates to Bull's eye.

Though, interestingly, the phrase sounds very close to bhains ki aankh [literally, buffalo's eye], which is a slang to express surprise.

Not really sure of this, though some of the sources suggest that the phrase bhains ki aankh also originates from bull's eye, despite not being an exact translation.

Bhains ki Aankh is the title of an Anurag Kashyap film directed by Tushar Hiranandani, which was earlier supposed to be titled womaniya, which is nothing but a very localised version for 'woman'.

Chhichhore Meaning | छिछोरे

Chhichhora (also spelled as chichora, Devanagari:छिछोरा) is Hindi for shallow, superficial, worthless. It's often used for vagrant boys who do nothing but wander around, troubling people.

Chhichhore (again, also spelled as chichore often, Devanagari:छिछोरे) is plural for chhichhora, and hence means more than one such vagrant boys, or a group of them.

Khandaani Shafakhana Meaning | ख़ानदानी शफ़ाख़ाना

Shafakhana [also spelled as shafakhana, shafaakhaanaa, shafaakhaana etc., Devanagari:शफ़ाख़ाना] is an Urdu word which comes from shafaa (शफ़ा), recovery, and khaanaa (ख़ाना), a place, thus making shafakhana, meaning a place for recovery, i.e. a hospital, or a clinic. This khaanaa is pronounced with the kh- from the epiglottis, as opposed to खाना which means food.

However, these days, the word Shafakhana in India is often limited to clinics of certain kind, where taboo issues, mainly those related to sex, are claimed to be resolved.

Khaandaani [again, spelled as khandani, khandaani etc. as well, Devanagari:ख़ानदानी, is a common Urdu word, well-known in the Hindi belt as well, and means belonging to a family, familial. It's also used for belonging to a respected family.

Khandaani Shafakhana, thus, means a familial clinic or a hospital, but mostly likely one which is not much reliable, and may have a quack instead of a doctor.

Jabariya Jodi Meaning | जबरिया जोड़ी

Jodi (or joRi) is simple Hindi for a pair or couple. Jabariya comes from jabran or zabardasti which mean forcefully. Hence the phrase Jabariya Jodi would mean a forcefully made couple.

Jabariya Jodi is a 2019 film starring Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra. The film is based on the story of groom kidnapping, a practice followed in some areas in Bihar. Jabariya is used mostly in the Eastern Hindi regions, i.e. Bihar, Jharkhand and Eastern UP, and hence the name.

Chhapaak Meaning | छपाक

Chhapaak (also spelled Chapaak/ Chhapak, Devanagari: छपाक) is the sound of a splash. One could call chhapaak a splash, but more precisely, chhapaak is an onomatopoeia for splash, the sound when something hits a liquid.

The word Chhapaak is used in the Hu tu tu song 'Chhai Chhappa Chhai, Chhapaak Chhai' by Gulzar. Now his Meghna Gulzar's film made on an acid attack incident is called Chhapaak, the title likely coming from the sound of the acid hitting a face suddenly and changing the victim's life forever.

Batti Gul Meter Chalu Meaning | बत्ती गुल मीटर चालू

Batti Gul Meter Chaalu is a 2018 film starring Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, and directed by Shree Narayan Singh.

Here, batti is light (i.e. electricity in this context), gul means gone, not there, meter is the electricity meter, and chaalu means working, still going on adding to the reading. So the meaning is that while there is no electricity, the meter is still on, which means the user is still paying.

The title basically implies an inaccuracy, intended or unintended, because of which someone is in trouble, and continues to be so.

Fanne Khan / Fanney Khan Meaning | फ़न्ने ख़ाँ

Fanne Khan or Fanney Khan (Devanagari:फ़न्ने ख़ाँ) is a proverbial, often derogatory name used for someone who thinks of himself as some kind of a big achiever, but isn't considered as the same by others.

I'm not sure of the origin of Fanney Khan, though it could be related to Urdu word 'fan' (phonetically like English 'fun'), which means art, generally that of any kind.

Fanney Khan is quite similar in usage to 'tees maar khan'.

Fanney Khan is the title of a 2018 Bollywood film starring Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao.

PS: I believe that the meaning of Fanney Khan as explained in the film's teaser is more of an artistic interpretation, which may be useful for the film, than the actual meaning.

Andhadhun Meaning | अंधाधुन

Andhadhun (Devanagari:अंधाधुन) is the name of a 2018 film directed by Sriram Raghavan, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Radhika Apte, and Tabu. The film, it seems from the posters, is about a blind piano player. Now in Hindi, andha (अंधा) is for blind, and dhun (धुन) is for a tune.

However, the strange union of words seems to be inspired by a different word, that is 'andhaadhundh' (अंधाधुंध). Andhaadhundh or andhadhundh is an adjective, meaning excessive, unbridled, violent, rash (something like, in blind rage, though dhundh is haze, and not rage) and isn't really related to blindness or music, and it may or may not be related to the movie.

By the way, a fun fact. Sriram Raghavan's 2012 film Agent Vinod's song Raabta also shows a girl who is blind and plays a piano as a shootout takes place around her.

Nawaabzaade / Nawabzade / Nawabzaade Meaning

Nawaab (or Nawab, Devanagari:नवाब, Urdu:نواب) is Urdu for a Prince.

-zaadaa (or -zaada or -zada) is a suffix for 'born to'.

Hence, Nawaabzaada (or Nawabzaada) means born to the prince. As such, the word could be legitimate usage for a Prince's son (a daughter would have been Nawaabzaadi/ Nawabzaadi), since there are no kings and princes in the present day India, the usage of the word now is mostly in a sarcastic manner, and thus it's often used with people who do nothing, but expect things to be great for them.

Nawabzaade is plural for Nawabzaada.

Ayyari/ Ayyaari/ Aiyaari/ Aiyaary Meaning | ऐयारी

So you haven't seen Chandrakanta, right? Because if you had, you'd know what aiyaary means. That's how I know.

Aiyaary is a term very frequently used in the magic related Hindi novels of the late 19th and early 20th century. It's a word which loosely means 'wizardry' or 'magic', though if you want to be more specific, it had often to do with changing one's appearance with the help of magic.

The word has a negative connotation, and aiyaari is often connected with deception and villainy. Aiyaary is the title of a film directed by 'A Wednesday' director Neeraj Pandey, starring Siddharth Malhotra, Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah.

The wizard who does all this (mostly bad) magic is called an aiyyaar.

Bareilly ki Barfi Meaning | बरेली की बर्फ़ी

Since we are here to discuss the meaning, first let's clear the meaning.

Bareilly is the name of a town in Western Uttar Pradesh, of course spelled so by the British (kids always start with spelling it Bareli or something like that and teachers get to show off their intelligence on this name). Barfi, as you probably know by now, is an Indian sweet, traditionally white (barf=ice/snow, hence the name), but now found in all colors.

So the name simply means that-white-sweet of Bareilly.

For a diversion from the meaning though, as far as I have known Bareilly, it's been more famous for laddoos, especially those from Kipps, from earlier times. Not sure if the shop is still as good. I'd hope it is. But then when it comes to the movie's name, maybe they named it so for the alliteration one gets in Bareilly ki Barfi.

Bhanwarey Meaning | भँवरे

Bhanwara (Devanagari:भँवरा) is Hindi for a bumblebee.

In Hindi poetry and songs, bhanwara is often used as a symbol of a male lover, and sometimes an unfaithful one at that. The reason probably has to do with the fact that a bumblebee goes to the flower for its honey, but then goes away.

Bhanwarey (भँवरे) is the plural form of bhanwara.

Bhanwarey is also the name of a Hindi film by Shaurya Singh.

Badrinath ki Dulhaniya Meaning | बद्रीनाथ की दुल्हनिया

Dulhan is Hindi/Urdu for a bride. Dulhaniya is another way to call a Dulhan.

Badrinath is the name of a person here, and the meaning of Badrinath ki Dulhaniya is simply Badrinath's bride.

Jeena Isi ka Naam Hai Meaning

Jeena isi ka Naam Hai (Devanagari: जीना इसी का नाम है) is Hindi (and also Urdu) for 'This is what is called living/life', with an emphasis on 'this'.

Anarkali of Aarah Meaning | अनारकली ऑफ़ आरा

Arrah (also spelled as Ara, though not much as aarah or araah) is a town in the Bhojpur district in Bihar, almost 50 km from Patna. Anarkali is a character famous from the Hindi film Mughal-e-Azam who was ordered to be buried alive by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, but the authenticity of the story, which is found in texts from the time of Jehangir himself, cannot be proved.

Nonetheless, Anarkali has become popular as a beautiful dancer, and to an extent as a brave/fearless person too, and that seems to be the inference that is used here in the name of the film Anarkali of Aarah. That is, the movie is about a girl who is a beautiful dancer from the town of Arrah.

Phillauri Meaning | फिल्लौरी / ਫਿਲੌਰੀ

Phillaur is a town in the Jalandhar district in Punjab, India, and the residents of the town of Phillaur are called Phillauris. [Just the way residents of Amritsar are called Amritsari (aur ambarsariya sometimes) and residents of Ludhiana, Ludhianvi.]

In the Anushka Sharma starrer film Phillauri, it seems the word is used as a way to call someone, much like a name, as the person's name is not known or mentioned. So he is called just Phillauri for he is from Phillaur.

The person in question, as per the trailer, seems to be Diljit Dosanjh, so mostly for practical purposes, Diljit Dosanjh's character will be called Phillauri in the film, and probably the movie is named after that character only.

Dangal Meaning | दंगल

dangal is a Hindi word used for wrestling competition. The word is as such used for wrestling and the entire setup where the wrestling happens, too, but it most commonly refers to a competition, where you often wrestle numerous people to win a pre-declared prize.
