After being sung by Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh, the ghazal has been in Bollywood too, though in the form of a song with just the Mukhda borrowed from the original [Mohit Chauhan/KK, Film: Sikandar]. This time it's none other than Vishal Bhardwaj composing it for Arijit Singh to sing. A slow track, it begins with a sher in between and then comes to the beginning. Expect that to be Gulzar Sahab's way.

The song is a performance of Shahid Kapoor - Haider - in front of KK and Tabu's characters who are actually the people he is talking about in the song. However, this is more like codewords, so they wouldn't understand in the beginning, and it'd settle in slowly as the story proceeds. At the end when he comes to precise details of Baramulla's Shirinpur, it'd get crystal clear to KK what he's talking, while Tabu, who is the 'bulbul' of this story, is the one Haider wants to be aware of the situation. How much and whether she understands would be seen in the movie only I believe.

Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar can always be a deadly combination. Vishal Bhardwaj and Vishal Dadlani have been a hit once. Vishal Bhardwaj and Rock are something very good, though quite underrated (remember Paanch? That was a rock album at the beginning of the millennium). And Vishal Dadlani and Rock go quite hand in hand.
To tell the truth, the chances were pretty good that the song would come out well. But it's a gem that comes once in a while even from Vishal Bhardwaj's kitty. It was a treat to listen to in the trailer itself, and now that the full song is here, I have a feeling that it may well be the best thing in the movie, even if the movie is as good as I expect it to be. Listen to the song if you haven't. It's a must.
And yeah, the sleep Gulzar sahab is talking about is the eternal sleep.

If you have an idea of the Hamlet, you can easily relate it to the scene in the movie, where Shahid has a gun in his hand and is asking 'jaan doon ki jaan loon', much like the confusion Hamlet of Shakespeare was in, in his soliloquy 'to be or not to be', while contemplating [or feigning, as the case may be according to one's interpretation] suicide.
The doubt whether it was actual contemplation of suicide or just feigning isn't cleared by Vishal in here as well, though my personal expectation is that the feigning part may be kept off from the movie.

Haidar/ Haider Meaning
Haidar or Haider [Devnagari:हैदर,Arabic:حيدر] is an Arabic word, which means lion.
It's a common Muslim name throughout the world, including India, where Haider Ali was a famous Indian de facto ruler, and father of Tipu Sultan, who ruled over the Kingdom of Mysore.
Haider is also the name of Vishal Bhardwaj's film based on Hamlet. Vishal has earlier made Maqbool and Omkara, based on Shakespearean plays Macbeth and Othello. As you may notice, the names of movies (and the characters) have the same first letters, a practice he has been following since Maqbool, for all the important characters of movies.
