Gulon mein Rang Bhare Lyrics Translation | Haider

Movie: Haider
Music: Vishal Bhardwaj
Ghazal: Faiz Ahmad 'Faiz'
Singer: Arijit Singh

The famous ghazal of Faiz keeps getting more mainstream and more popular by the day. After being sung by Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh, the ghazal has been in Bollywood too, though in the form of a song with just the Mukhda borrowed from the original [Mohit Chauhan/KK, Film: Sikandar]. This time it's none other than Vishal Bhardwaj composing it for Arijit Singh to sing. A slow track, it begins with a sher in between and then comes to the beginning. Expect that to be Gulzar Sahab's way.

Bada hai dard ka rishta
Dard ka rishta...

The relationship with pain is a big, important one..
The relationship with pain..

Bada hai dard ka rishta
Ye dil ghareeb sahi
Tumhaare naam pe aayenge gham-gusaar chale..

The relationship with pain is an important one,
Even as this heart is poor,
Hearing your name, the consolers will come (easily)..

[The consolers here are people who share the relationship of pain with the poet/singer, because they have had the same pain, given by his/their beloved.]

Gulon mein rang bhare baad-e-naubahaar chale
Chale bhi aao ke gulshan ka karobaar chale

Let there be colors in the flowers,
and the breeze of new spring would come.
Come, so that the daily business of garden can go on..

Qafas udaas hai yaaron sabaa se kuch to kaho
Kaheen to bahr-e-Khuda aaj zikr-e-yaar chale

The cage is sad, O friends, say something to the breeze,
For God's sake, somewhere there should be a discussion about the beloved today..

Jo hum pe guzri so guzri magar shab-e-hijraan
Humaare ashq teri aaqbat sanwaar chale

What has happened to me, has happened, but on the night of separation,
my tears made your future better..

Chale bhi aao ke gulshan ka kaarobaar chale
Gulon mein rang bhare baad-e-naubahaar chale

what a poor translation... it kills the meaning... you are simply translating individual words.

I agree somewhat with the above comment. Even a novice like me can see the flaws. On the other hand, this is supposed to be just a translation. May be not a literal one, but a translation nonetheless. Dont expect it to be a guide or an explanation or an expansion. Readers would need to make out their own meanings based on what is presented, just as the original urdu version.

If you know it then why don't you just do it instead of criticizing someone who did

Still appreciate any translation offered. Whether literal or poetic, we should leave it to the reader to decide.
