Apne hi Rang mein Mujhko – O Rangrez Mere Lyrics Translation

Movie: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi
Singer: Javed Bashir, Shreya Ghoshal
Label: Sony Music

O Rangrez mere is one of the best songs of not just Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, but it's one of the best composition that Shankar Ehsaan Loy have come up with in past some time. The raag-based, slow paced song sung by Javed Bashir and Shreya Ghoshal is a conversational one where a loved one wants the beloved to color him/her in the color of the beloved and hence calls the beloved a dyer.

O rangrez..
O rangrez tere rang dariyaa mein
Doobnaa hai bas teraa ban ke
Haye nahi rehnaa doojaa ban ke

O dyer,
O dyer, in your river of colors,
I have to drown, becoming all yours..
I don't have to live belonging to someone else..

Ek bhi saans alag nahi lenee
Khainch lenaa praan is tan ke
Haye, nai rehna doojaa ban ke

I don't want to take a single breath away from you,
pull the life from my body away..
I don't want to live belonging to someone else..

Apne hee rang mein, mujh ko rang de
Dheeme dheeme rang mein, mujh ko rang de
Saundhe saundhe rang mein mujh ko rang de
Rang de na, rang de naa, rang de naa..

Color me in your own color..
Slowly, color me in your color..
In fragrant color, color me..
Color me, color me please...

Ghunghroo hai tu
main to hoon paanv piyaa, jhanananan
Peepal tu main to hoon chaanv piyaa
Dabi hoon magan

You're the ankle-bells,
I am the foot, o beloved..
[and then there is sound of ghunghroo, the ankle-bells, signifying the togetherness of both.]
You're the peepal tree, and I am the shade,
I am happily there below you..

O nainon mein bas chhab teree lehraaye
Chhalke chhalke chhalke re
Barse halke halke
Apne hi rang mein

Your shadow waves in my eyes, [like waves of sea]
and spills, spills, spills..
rains slowly.. [she's talking of tears here]
In your own color...

Apne hi rang mein mujh ko rang de...

Maalaa mein aa tujh ko piro loon
Tujhe pehnoon sajan
Hothon pe aa sargam saa boloon
Tujhe raT loon sajan

Come, I'll put you in a garland [like a flower]
and wear you, O beloved..
Come to my lips, I'll sing you like a sargam
[sargam is the music of any song in terms of elements which are sung by experts.]
I'll remember you by heart, O beloved..

Sajan,
Tees meri pees de mujh mein hi
Ghul ja, mil ja, mil jaa sajnaa
Pighal ke mil jaa, mil jaa..
Apne hi rang mein..

O beloved,
grind (and end) the twinge I feel,
get dissolved into me only, get mixed, O beloved..
Melt and get mixed,
In your own color..

Apne hi rang mein mujhko rang de...

"Rang", "rangrez" and similar words are also sometimes used to denote the love and blessing of god/guru. E.g., see the duma-dum-mast-kalandar lyrics.

I wonder if that could also be a meaning of the poem. It works pretty well---wanting to be one with god.

(We take our) colour from Allah, and who is better than Allah at colouring. We are His worshippers.

Excellent translation.

I am the foot, o beloved..
